Facebook and the Government

FBI,CIA, and more
Billions of peope use Facebook worldwide every day. Ever since the Internet became able to be used to the home. However, questions have been raised that Facebook may have connections with the CIA, the FBI, and even the entire U.S. government.
Facebook has the resources that not any secret intelligence agency would ever have the resources to get. Facebook has a person's email, address, phone number, and can see who your friends are. Facebook has wall postings, pictures past events, where someone is going. And right now Facebook is the fastest growing web site in the world.
What is interesting, is that when a person opens up a Facebook account and clicks on the " I agree" button, he or she has given Facebook the consent to have any personal information to be transferred to the United States Government.
The CIA is not the only agency that Facebook allows to take information. Facebook has given information to the FBI, the DEA and , the ICE and allowed them to look into users accounts, and use as much information as they want.
Many people in the U.S. have been very angry about this, but so have other Countries. The German Prime Minister For Consumer Protection, Ilse Ainer, asked others in her agency to stop using Facebook because she feels Facebook will threaten the data they have.
Facebook has actually been doing this for much longer then people have ever known about it. In 2008 in a manual for law enforcement, Facebook specifies the kind of information it provides, ranging from Neoprings, a person's profile and screen shot, to IP logs, contact data, group members, and now basically what ever the government asks for.
Reuters hasbeen looking into this and found a few unsealed cases where Facebook helped the FBI. In 2010 an FBI agent went though the Facebook accounts of four " young satanists" who had been accused of burning down a church in Ohio. When Reuters contacted the lawyer who had represented those men, the lawyer told Reuters he had never been informed of that.
Facebook has been interesting lately, because a lot has been going on. It give out information, and recently just hit the stock market. Some people want to close their accounts because they feel it is a horrible invasion of privacy. Some people feel it is just fun and games. It has been interesting in the last few months. What do you think?

Michelle,
Very well laid out. The words I’m writing right now are being monitored. The Project is, of course, on the Fed’s radar. While we will be making life hard for the hired hands were crooked in Washington, I invite Big Brother to watch us do it. That’s one of the reasons that were not taking donations yet. We are not giving money to charity, so the 501(c)(3), which enables donors to deduct it from their taxes, doesn’t fit the way were set up. Most organizations don’t care and do it anyway, because audits are far and few between. We are making enemies, in high places, so I’m setting this up with every single one of my legal bases covered. I guess what I’m saying is that we have nothing to hide, and when they start pulling their dirty tricks on me, I’ll just turn it into publicity. As you may know, our goal is 6 million members with $60 dollars million a month in revenue. I will provide perfect transparency to our members and the government. Anybody will be able to see where every time a sitting with the touch of a button. Knowledge is power, and in this case, their knowledge about us will give US power. I guess the reason I’m going into this long drawn out thing is this. They are going to hack us where ever they can. On one hand, they can use information against us. On the other hand, the only information they can have the information that we choose to give them. If were smart, this can work against them. Brother, it’s been a long day, and I’m rambling.lol
Good work, girl!

It's pretty scary when the CIA states that "Facebook is a dream come true." Thanks for sharing. This is chilling to know what our government is doing.
It is a good thing that I never opened an account there! I definitively never put any personal data in the open, the web net world is too infinite! My freedom and privacy are primordial!
In fact I am happy that it is so. If the Govt uses the information judiciously, many anti socials and terrorists will be caught before they do anything really bad. Let this be a secret.
I am clicking the share button because I think everyone should read this hub and watch the short video attached where a CIA official states, "Facebook is a dream come true for the CIA." You may think twice before posting something on Facebook again. Michele, thanks for SHARING.
One of my favorite books is George Orwell's 1984. That said, I've always been leery of Facebook for the reasons you've written about. I've been reluctant to open an account even though it would be so beneficial to me at Hubpages and I certainly have nothing to hide. Just have very judicious about what I share, I suppose. Personal information is in so many places these days. Thanks so much for the information - and the caution.
I have heard that Facebook has made the process of closing your account almost impossible, or very difficult at the least. I would be interested in knowing if you were successful. Thanks.
Not to mention, FB SELLS your information-INCLUDING your email address to anyone that wants it. Closing your FB account DOES NOT WORK as they keep your info and continue to sell it.
Michele, I have not met one person who has successfully closed their FB account. They all relate a story similar to the experience you just had. It is a shame.
Hi Michele.
Fantastic video. Fantastic hub and I hope millions read and watch.
I asked a question on "Web Answers" - How can I close my Face Book account and within the last hour have two answers. Both explain how to close the account to which I have closed two accounts.

It worked for me but will take 14 days to complete. So you'd better not sign into anything to do with Face Book.
Take care.

Interesting hub, Michelle. This doesn't surprise me either. I have always felt they were doing this even before facebook. With the internet came hackers of all sorts. As for the government they would most likely think of sites such as facebook as being public domain. They are going to use any resources available when it comes to national security or catching criminals. Photos posted on facebook or other sites are now used for facial recognition. Cellphones and smartphones are used for tracking devices and providing information. Facebook is now most likely the top site used for screening job applicants, too. With all the newest technology has come many tools used by others with both good and bad intentions.
