Epilepsy or Kidney Failure

finding out after being sick for a little while.

You have epilepsy and take a lot of medicine No seizures! You feel great! It is a wonderful thing! Then one day you feel sick. So, you end up in the ER. just to keep your medicine down. You need to keep your medicine down.

They give you water, just through the IV. Then take some tests, Just normal tests. After a while, they come to you. Gentle and quiet, just to talk. Then they tell you why they came. They need to tell you why they came.

At first, one holds your hand, and quietly says to you, your kidney is starting to fail, just starting to fail. The problem is the medication you are on. The one to stop the seizures. It is the best to stop your seizures.

They say, they will tell your doctor, you have a lot to think about. Your seizures, the medication you take and something called hemodialysis. And what is hemodialysis?

The more you think about that, the more sad you feel. When the seizures stopped, you felt you were free. You could go out alone, drive, and have fun with friends. So, you read about hemodialysis, and found out what it takes from you. The days, the hours.

It is not a cure, but it takes the freedom away, like the seizures did. So, which one is better? More tests will come, like it was before, test after test. When will it stop? Just when will it stop?

So, what do you do, when you want to be free?

Maybe you won't just, ever be free.

Update May 2012 The last Kidney test is normal Thank God!

Michele, is this happening to you now or did it happen in the past? I hope it is in the past.

It is happening now. I started feeling sick last week, was sick to my stomach. So, like I said, I ended up in the ER. They did some tests, and well, there you go. Just sort of waiting. Didn't know what to do, so I wrote. Just wrote..it is helping me feel a little bit better.

My family reads facebook, I called. Strange how we talk sometimes. Why is it easier to write?

Sometimes, writing helps to bring out feelings we did not know we had. I am sorry to hear this is happening to you. I will be praying for you earnestly, Michele.

Wow, Michele, so sorry. I am aware of this and just praying. With my medication for the seizures (Depakote), I'm told liver failure is the bigger concern. Of course I constantly get tested and so far so good. Although I am opposed to legalization across the board of drugs, we as epileptics in the USA could sure benefit from the very successful anti-seizure meds made from marijuana and actually produced by USA Pharmaceutical Companies which is prescribed all over the world and which appears to have very minimal side effects according to studies I have read. Anyway, you are in my prayers and yes PRAYER definitely makes a difference. I voted UP, useful, awesome and interesting.

My kidney is ok, my neurologist is lowering some of my medication, because I am small and weigh only 90 pounds. It has to be lowered slowly so I dont have a seizure, but for now I have to drink a lot of water. I just truely believe God is protecting me, I know I have said it before, but it is true.

Simply wonderful. Praise the Lord. I lost 70 pounds this past year as a result of desire to have my meds reduced. I am hoping when I return to my neurologist on next visit that he does cut me back. The Depakote also causes weight gain which was driving me crazy. Until I started on Atkins diet I would just smell food and gain....LOL the complete opposite of you. Anyway, so glad to hear your kidney is OK and you are getting your meds lowered. Wonderful news.

Thank you, and I am glad you are getting better. One of my meds takes away the appetite, so reading this I just went and got something to eat. I am very glad we are friends.

Michele, I hope that everything will be alright. At first I feel a little scared reading; im afraid of being sick, of hospitals, of the news..then when I read the comments, i feel scarier because it is really happening to the person i know (maybe not personally but we've met here in HP). Will be praying for you.
